Martha's Vineyard is an exceptional community in America that has seen blacks and whites live together without the burden of structural institutional racism. The absence of a pervasively discriminatory culture on the island allowed blacks to buy property as early as the 19th Century. The continued accumulation of property and the presence of a tolerant environment has led to a sinking of deep roots by the African American community and the proliferation of cultural, intellectual, public policy and social activities. This book uncovers, frames and connects the dots of a historical narrative that defines the vision and values class on the Island as well as the Age of Brooke and the Age of Obama.
