Mae Jemison (1956 - ) is an American engineer, physician and astronaut. She was a medical doctor in the Peace Corps when she decided to enter the space program and became the first African American woman in space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor in 1992. She currently leads the 100 Year Starship Project developing the viability of human space travel to another star over the next century with DARPA. Jemison is a frequent public speaker encouraging STEM involvement and improvements in education for women and minorities. She continues to shape the fields of space, science and technology.
