Gwendolyn Brooks (1913 - 2000) was an American poet, teacher and author. She published her first poem at 13 years old. By the age of 16, she had already written and published approximately 75 poems. At 17, she started submitting her work to "Lights and Shadows," the poetry column of the Chicago Defender, an African-American newspaper. Her work dealt with personal celebration and struggles of ordinary people. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry making her the first African American to win this prestigious award. She went on to win the National Medal of Arts. Notable works: A Dream in Bronxville, Annie Allen, Maud Martha.
